IOs mapped out for Females Candidates
This topic covers the Individual Obstacles (IOs) female candidates face during outdoor GTO tasks at ISSB. These IOs are equally applicable across all-female courses — Lady Cadet Course (LCC), GDP, and CAE. Apart from these obstacles, ISSB Tests and Procedures[/url] remain the same for girls and boys.
Check ISSB Tests and Procedures here.
GTO outdoor tasks normally include 9 obstacles, but there are variations for female candidates in number and time allowed, depending on the course.

Breakdown and technique for each obstacle
The 6 IOs for LCC candidates are:
- Long Jump
- Tyre
- Hanging Bridge
- Boxing Ring
- High Jump
- Zig Zag
2. Tyre: The tyre is tied with a rope at approximately 4ft height — You hold the rope first. then push your body upward, insert legs in the tyre first and just slide through.
3. Hanging Bridge: Tip: The concept is to go through it - just do it - concept, don't think much. Cross it by taking just one step or at the most two steps on the plank. Don't be afraid of falling down. The sides are padded with mattresses for safety.
4. Boxing Ring: Three horizontally tied ropes, with about 2 feet 6 inches height from ground at set at a distance of 3 to 4 feet from each others. You are required to jump over the first, pass below the second one and then again jump over the last. Simple, no technique is needed.
5. High Jump: Cross a stick placed across two poles at 2ft 8 inches height. The poles are out of bound (marked red) — don't touch them. You may touch the stick itself, as long as it doesn't fall.
6. Zig Zag: Planks are coloured yellow, meaning they're inbound for your shoes. Three sections increase in height: first section 2ft to 2ft 6 inches, second up to 4ft 6 inches, third up to 7ft. Jump down to the ground from the final section.
Build the stamina these obstacles demand
- Do light exercise daily in the lead-up to your ISSB so you're ready for outdoor tasks.
- A simple benchmark: run 1 mile in 14 minutes or less, daily.
- Practicing light skip jump with a rope can help tremendously.
- Stay happy and strong, don't over think.
How many obstacles does an LCC candidate have to perform?
6 obstacles: Long Jump, Tyre, Hanging Bridge, Boxing Ring, High Jump, and Zig Zag.
Are the Individual Obstacles the same for LCC, GDP, and CAE?
The IOs are equally applicable across all-female courses, but the number of obstacles and time allowed varies by course. GDP includes 3 additional obstacles (Tarzan Swing, Monkey Bridge, Rope) not required in LCC.
What do the colour codes at the obstacles mean?
Generally, red marks a part of the obstacle that is out of bound for your body (e.g. the High Jump poles). Yellow marks a surface that is inbound for your shoes (e.g. the Zig Zag planks). Always confirm with your GTO's specific instructions before attempting the obstacle.
What is the exact height of the Tyre obstacle?
It's approximately 4ft based on recent test cycles, but this has changed over time and isn't confirmed as fixed. Treat it as an estimate and follow your GTO's on-ground briefing.
How should I prepare physically before ISSB?
Do light daily exercise, with a target of running 1 mile in 14 minutes or less. Twice daily if you can manage it.
