How Group Discussion is conducted at ISSB ?
- Group Discussion at ISSB is one of the first step in a group environment i.e. first time candidates get together as a group. Its therefore, important to create an impact on group. The Group discussion at issb is conducted by Deputy President.
- The subjects / topics of Group discussion are in English as well as in Urdu.
- You will lead to a room where you will be told to sit and introduce yourself to the group-fellows.
- Deputy president will let you know the topic. Group Discussion Topics are not difficult.
- The topics are normally social subjects or current affairs. Some topic of national interest like economy, inflation etc can also be included.
- This Test have a limited time of 15 min.
- As the time ends, Deputy President will ask you to stop discussion.
-Thus this test is ended and you will proceed to the next test.
How to Start a Group Discussion at ISSB ? and Common Points for Speaking in it.
- Choose good starting - this can be prepared before hand (seen next heading below).
- Understand and learn topic processing techniques.
- Topic handling in Group discussion is similar to essay writing / Public Speaking at ISSB.
- Be Clear & Coherent - Don't murmur or practice to be fluent.
- Try not to over stretch single argument. Switch arguments.
- Try to keep yourself short and relevant.
- Make efficient use of time. Remember you are not the only one who has to talk.
- Learn as much to stop talking as much you learn to start talking.
- Memorized some generic quote for possible addition, as per relevancy of topic.
- Remember, its a good opportunity to have nice start to group interaction.
What is importance of Group Discussion in ISSB ?
- First impression is the best impression.
- Good opportunity to start better group environment.
- Good to time to cast impression on Deputy President.
- Building own self confidence.
What Skills are Judged in GD?
- Communication skills, convincing power and interpersonal skills.
- Behavior / manners in a group.
- Patience and listening skills.
- Analytic, variety and imagination in ideas - critical thinking.
- Knowledge / awareness, problem processing / solving, planning ability.
- Attitude and confidence.
What can be possible starting line for a Group Discussion in ISSB (if one is first one to talk)?
Below is with the assumption that introduction has already taken place or you have been barred to mention you name / introduction, otherwise, a sentence about yourself can be added to start with:

- I am thankful to Deputy President for giving us opportunity to speak on such interesting topic.
- Gentlemen, this group discussion will be focused on _____. First, let me give you a brief overview of the topic.
How to Interrupt / Enter in a ongoing Group Discussion at ISSB i.e when other is speaking i.e. How to speak at the middle of ongoing discussion
- Choose the Right Timing: When some is expected to pause or about to finish a point or has already spoken long.
- Be little Loud, Quick and Concise.
- Have some strong new point. Be able to take conversation to next level. Don' repeat old points.
- May start from the last speaker’s views.
What can be the Sentence while Speaking at the Middle of Conversation in a Group Discussion at ISSB
- Chest # .... and ..... have correctly highlighted the importance / pros and cons of ......... - I will further.....
- Thanks to chest # ...... and this ...... we are developing a very interesting discussion on .........
- As expected, this discussion is coming up so well, I will just add a little to already well communicated ideas of chest #... and ...
- Gentlemen, the advantages have been amply covered by chest # ..... I would like to mention disadvantes.
Tips for Smart Group Discussion at ISSB
- Be patients, don't loose temper.
- Maintain eye contact with candidates.
- Interrupt (to get your chance) when the other speaker pauses to breath or to have spoken for a long.
- No irrelevant and ambiguous commenting.
- Try to avoid stammering and stuttering.
- Keep your body upright and watch your body language.
- Be cheerful and polite, its discussion withing a team not a war with enemy.
- Move from agreement to disagreement.
- Practice makes a man perfect. Practice taking conversation to next level

all aspects are considered at issb, selection/rejection isn't done for a single aspect like this.Guest wrote: 18 Jul 2026, 10:40 Sir can the possibility of getting recommended in issb be affected by shifting from Navy to army.
